COAT SEASON, UNDER $500
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: WOOL BLEND COAT • SHORT TRENCH • LAYERED BLAZER • RAFAEL COAT • RYLAN JACKET • FUR VEST • PERCY COAT
I’ve reached the point in the season when I want to buy coats. Not because I necessarily need another one, but because a really good coat can do basically all the work from here through February.
And there are a lot of good ones right now. I’m especially into shorter jackets, chocolate brown, quilted styles, faux fur, and the very welcome return of the toggle coat. There are also a few classic wool coats in the mix (this one is really good) because, inevitably, those are the ones I end up wearing the most.
The best part: everything here is under $500. Some are well under (see: here and here). From quilted jackets and sportier styles to faux fur layers and wool coats, here, a hit list with really good coats to shop right now.
BODEN SWING BOX SHORT TRENCH — $320
I love a classic trench, but the shorter proportion makes this one feel much more current. The contrast collar is the detail that sold me
VANESSA BRUNO ROUX HELISE FUR VEST — $445
I didn’t necessarily have a faux-fur vest on my fall shopping list, and yet here we are. This over a chunky knit with denim feels very right.
BODEN RAGLAN WAX JACKET — $360
Plaid can go very preppy very quickly, but this doesn’t. The oversized cut and slightly slouchy shape make it feel cool rather than traditional.
RHONE MONTEREY QUILTED JACKET — $248
This is the coat you keep by the door and wear constantly. Easy, warm, and uncomplicated—which is sometimes exactly what I want.
QUINCE DOUBLE-FACED MERINO WOOL DRAPED COLLAR WRAP COAT — $200
I’m still very much on the chocolate-brown train. This has that clean, minimal look that makes it appear considerably more expensive than $200.
MANGO WOOL BLEND COAT — $199.99
This is the kind of coat that instantly fixes a very basic outfit. Jeans, sweater, loafers, this—and suddenly you look like you tried.
BODEN REVERSIBLE BORG MIX COAT — $249
A little English countryside, but not costume-y. I especially love the olive with the brown collar and those contrast pockets.
FAVORITE DAUGHTER THE CITY LAYERED BLAZER — $348
Gray is having a very good fall. This is the sort of coat I’d wear with denim, black trousers, loafers, sneakers—pretty much everything.
ALEX MILL CHILTERN STREET JACKET — $325
For anyone whose coat closet already contains enough black and navy, this green is excellent. Still neutral enough to wear constantly, but a lot more interesting.
RALPH LAUREN WAXED BARN JACKET — $270
This is probably one of the most useful coats in the entire edit. Perfect over a tee now, a sweater later, and leggings basically always.
SAVE THE DUCK SOLANA HOODED JACKET — $498
Navy with the camel shearling collar is such a good combination. Sporty enough for everyday, but it still looks pulled together over jeans and a sweater.
SPLENDID X CELLA JANE CROP IRON COAT — $168
Simple in exactly the right way. The shorter shape looks especially good with high-waisted denim and trousers.
THE GREAT. OUTDOORS THE REVERSIBLE LOGGER PUFFER COAT — $395
I apparently cannot resist an olive quilted jacket with a corduroy collar. This one nails the whole heritage-jacket thing without feeling too precious.
TUCKERNUCK BROWN CHEVRON FUR ISABELLA COAT — $298
Chocolate-brown faux fur for under $300 is a fairly easy sell. I love this over an all-black outfit or just jeans and a white tee.
ZARA WOOL CROPPED FIT COAT — $319
Apparently one toggle coat was not enough for this story. I love the exaggerated closures and cropped shape on this one—it looks especially good with wide-leg denim.
VARLEY MID LENGTH JACKET — $288
Red continues to be one of my favorite ways to break up an otherwise neutral fall wardrobe. I’d wear this exactly as I would navy—with denim, camel, black, everything.
TOMMY HILFIGER TWILL PEACOAT — $250
Gold buttons will always get me. A navy peacoat is forever, and the slightly shorter length keeps this one from feeling overly classic.
ECKHAUS LATTA X J.CREW DUFFLE COAT — $498
I’m suddenly very interested in toggle coats again. The cropped proportion is what makes this one work: familiar, but not remotely schoolgirl.
