FALL SHOPPING, UNDER $500

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT:  JACKET • NECKLACE • FLATS • PANTS • BAG • BELT • JACKET • BAG • JEANS

There’s something especially satisfying about finding a fall piece that looks expensive without the price tag to match. Right now, there’s a lot happening under $500: great jackets, really good knits, new denim, chic dresses, plus accessories that will give new life to things already in your closet.

Below, the pieces I’d buy first—a hit list of the best fall buys under $500.

CARDIGAN WITH DETACHABLE FAUX FUR COLLAR

I love when a cardigan has enough personality that it can stand in for a jacket, and this one absolutely does. The leopard collar gives it just the right amount of wit without making the whole thing feel overly cute.

LEATHER BOOTS

A clean black knee boot is one of those fall purchases that earns its keep immediately. I especially like how minimal these are—no unnecessary hardware, no strange heel, just a really good shape that works with skirts, dresses, and denim.

STRIPED WOOL TURTLENECK

This is exactly the kind of sweater I want once the weather turns: cozy, graphic, and a little bit retro. The stripe combination feels unexpected enough to make simple jeans look like an actual outfit.

HALFDAYS NELIA PUFFER JACKET

A puffer I would actually be excited to wear. The olive color feels especially good for fall, and the cropped shape keeps it from swallowing the rest of your outfit.

REFORMATION CALISTA FLATS

Animal print is basically a neutral at this point, and these are proof. I’d wear them with denim, a grey trouser, or even a simple black dress when the outfit needs one interesting thing.

RUE SOPHIE MARTINE BELTED COAT

This is a lot of coat for under $500. The long, belted silhouette feels very old-school elegant, but the grey keeps it modern and incredibly easy to wear.

JCREW BEA BALLET FLATS

A little metallic shoe is one of my favorite ways to wake up a very sensible fall outfit. These are subtle enough for daytime but still give jeans and a sweater that little extra something.

REFORMATION VIDA LOW RISE PANT

These are undeniably a statement, which is exactly why I like them. The shape is relaxed and the print feels rich and autumnal—I’d keep everything else very quiet and let the pants be the point.

POLO RALPH LAUREN JACQUARD KNIT JACKET

This one is already hanging in my closet, waiting for the day when it’s actually cold enough to wear it. I love the cropped shape and unexpected colors; with denim and a ballet flat, it feels nostalgic in exactly the right way.

VERONICA BEARD CROSBIE SLIM WIDE-LEG JEAN

These jeans are kind of magical in the way that they look so good on everyone. They’re flattering in all the right way and – so important – they’re comfortable, too. They’re the perfect pair of jeans to wear with heels and booties.
