I feel like my beauty routine is in a bit of rut. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I just know it’s time for a little refresh. With that in mind, I’ve been doing a lot more beauty buying – makeup, hair tools, all the things – than usual. It’s a process of trial and error, after all, and the result has been a mix of hits and misses (more of the latter, to be honest). It’s a work in progress but, as always, I’ll report back on the good stuff.
Below, six beauty buys that made the hit list.
I feel like I am more on-the-go than ever which means there’s a lot of rear-view mirror makeup application. I like to keep this compact set in my handbag for when the need strikes. It’s a two-for-one, giving you a clear balm and a sheer color tint, both of which can be used for cheeks or lips. My favorite shade set is Rendezvou/Swipe. The color is a perfect shade of pink, giving my cheeks a barely-there flush.
I like to call this the Hailey Beiber hero product. Available in six different shades, the gel gives skin an instant, glass-like glow – think: Beiber! I have tried nearly all of the shades (I’m crazy for this product!) and while I like all of them, my favorite is Pixie Dream. It’s essentially a clear with a subtle hint of pink. I use it on my cheekbones as a highlighter nearly everyday, and, for a night out, I like to mix it (just a small pump!) with my foundation for all over glow.
I never used a primer before now. I really don’t wear that much makeup so primer always seemed like an unnecessary extra step. But the older I get, the more often I find myself wearing foundation, which I’ve learned looks much better if a primer is involved. I have no idea what made me decide to give this one a go as I had never even heard of the brand. Turns out my on-a-whim decision was a good one because I am totally obsessed. Not only is it a game-changer any time I wear foundation (helps any makeup I apply go on smoothly) but I also love wearing it on its own. It evens out my skin and gives it just a tiny bit of glow.
I have a lot of friends who say mascara is their “desert island beauty product.” I, on the other hand, rarely wear it. I’ve never found one that doesn’t flake off everywhere or irritate my eyes. This one is the exception. The water-resistant, extra black mascara makes my lashes look longer (the goal!) and never dries out or flakes off.
I have such vivid memories as a child of watching my mom get ready in the morning, always with hot rollers in her hair. She was clearly on to something because now, here I am doing the same thing. These rollers give my hair bouncy waves in ten minutes. I find myself using them all the time, especially as a way to refresh a day-old blow out. Hot tip: If you need a quick roller 101, head to YouTube. There are lots of great tutorials there.
My hair is no stranger to heat or color, making it absolutely essential that I take extra care of it in order to avoid breakage. This at-home conditioning treatment is perfect for in between color appointments. I use it once or twice a week on damp hair for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it out. If my hair needs a little more TLC, I’ll leave it on overnight.
