When it comes gift shopping, it’s the men that have always been the trickiest to shop for on my list. Whether shopping for a significant other, your child’s Godfather, a friend, men are tough. Thankfully, after 10 years of marriage and many (many!) gifts for my husband later, I have managed to come up with a few go-to goodies and tricks of the trade to win over the guys.

If he’s a clotheshorse (or, actually, even if he’s not), opt for elevated essentials. Upgrade his basics – think: a great cashmere sweater, a new fleece, a casual jacket, a dress shirt or two. Most men will wear the same pair of shoes until they literally. fall. apart. (Am I right?) So a new pair of loafers or some cool not-for-the-gym sneakers are usually a big hit. If you’re ready to splurge, a classic watch is a sure thing.

Is he an outdoorsman? I just discovered VSSL, a Canadian company that specializes in outdoor gear. I ordered several of the kits for gifts this year, including this one for my fisherman-husband. If he’s the one who’s usually manning the grill, this pizza oven is ideal. There’s always sports. Sporty selections are always a safe bet. Level up his gym-wear with some new essentials and a fresh pair of kicks. Top it off with this post-gym gadget.

If all else fails, opt for the practical. For the man who is always losing things, a set of Apple AirTags makes for a useful and oh-so perfect gift.
